Inadequate roads and traffic flow is one. There are two that are planned for improvement soon: Red Top Road widening project and Lopes Road repair (FEMA project together with the permanent Benicia Water line repair). But many decades old problems are being totally ignored: The I-80 Red Top Road exit: There is a dangerous situation where parents / relatives bringing Rodriguez High School students to school must pull over on the shoulder because of the slow traffic flow. There is NO planned solution for this.
The planned phase 3 and 4 interchange project (I-80, I-680, and SR 12) is needed to solve traffic problems. The STA chose to jump to phase 5 which builds a connector road from Business Center Drive to Red Top Road. This will facilitate the annexation of more land to the city of Fairfield that already plans to build more housing in the annexed area.
Nelda Mundy Elementary is the only school north of I-80. Enrollment is already at FULL capacity. Parents with young children now realize their child might not be able to attend the school they live close to. South of I-80, Cordelia has 2 elementary schools, a middle school, and Rodriguez High School. The middle school is at capacity. The elementary schools are close to capacity. There are no plans for new schools to be built in our area.
The inadequate roads accentuates the problem of magnified Risk if there is a fire or other disaster that creates the need for residents to evacuate their homes.
If the city uses property it already owns, the costs drop dramatically. Listen to Benicia's new city manager. He explains how Benicia could make affordable housing a reality.
Our local government should promote ADUs (accessory dwelling units). The growth of affordable housing can be accomplished at a rate that our stretched infrastructure can manage. ADUs don't affect the overall characteristic of a neighborhood. Other cities and counties welcome ADUs.
1. Lack of infrastructure to service the new residents.
2. Inadequate parking planned for new apartments.
3. No more capacity at local school. Parents will have to bring them to a different school or find other solutions.
4. Increased traffic problems.
We need to correct infrastructure deficiencies before adding projects that put more stress on existing structures and services.
